Between Boldness and Imprudence: Female Figures in the Poetry of Narsai
Sponsor(s): Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies
In this dissertation excerpt, Walsh examines how late antique Christian poets writing in Greek and Syriac retold the narratives of unnamed New Testament women. These poets reflected on the boldness of these women who transgressed communal and social boundaries, crafting figures of religious zeal for their audiences. Walsh explores how these poets expanded dialogue and scripted debate with Jesus in order to enhance the dramatic and gendered features of biblical texts.
