Why Don’t Citizens Hold Politicians Accountable for Air Pollution?
Air pollution is responsible for 6.7 to 9 million premature deaths every year, 90% of which occur in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Yet, few citizens in LMICs mobilize to pressure elected officials for toxic air. Shikhar Singh, assistant professor of political science at Duke, will discuss findings from conducting a large-scale citizens' survey in one of the world's most polluted cities, Delhi (India), to understand such puzzling political apathy.
Prior to Duke, Dr. Singh was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for the Advanced Study of India, University. He researches democratic accountability, ethnic politics, and the politics of development, with a focus on South Asia.
