The Social Lives of Bricks: Construction, Creativity, and Class in Rio de Janeiro
Alessandro Angelini (Fundação Getúlio Vargas and the Museu Nacional/PPGAS in Rio de Janeiro; Postdoctoral Associate at the London School of Economics) works on how a favela youth collective imagines their city through "play" and model-building in Morrinho ("little hill"). Local youth started the project in 1998 and they constructed a model of the Vila Pereira da Silva favela in Rio de Janeiro. Angelini's workshop explores the connections between urbanity, technologies of the imagination, space-making, and creative public expression. Lunch will be provided to participants. Please send an email confirming your attendance and be sure to note any allergies and/or dietary restrictions (globalbrazil@duke.edu).
