6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Dr. Bereket Habte Selassie

Dr. Bereket Selassie, former Attorney General of Ethiopia, Associate Justice of Ethiopia's Supreme Court, and Chairman of the Constitutional Commission of Eritrea. Author of several books, former professor at Howard and Georgetown University, and Emeritus Distinguished Professor of African Studies and Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Selassie is a premier scholar of African History and Law. Given his background and expertise, he will speak about the recent peace negotiations between Eritrea and Ethiopia, two key players in the Horn of Africa.

Eritrea and Ethiopia have a long and complex history of nationalist pride and unifying culture. After two decades of political hostility following a series of bloody border wars, the governments of Eritrea and Ethiopia have finally reached a peace agreement. While the recent reconciliation is positive, we know that peace can be fragile and is hard won. To help us work through what this historical negotiation could mean for the two countries and the East African region as a whole, Dr. Selassie will introduce the history of the two countries and discuss current Ethiopian and Eritrean relations in light of the new peace agreement. Please join us for a conversation about African developments and politics moving forward.
