Ali Michael and Ta-Nehisi Coates
Color of Education

An annual summit bringing together educators, policymakers, nonprofit leaders, researchers, students, parents, philanthropists, and community members for a one-day convening focused on race, equity and education in North Carolina. The full day event will feature plenaries, workshops and panels during which speakers and attendees will discuss cross-sector strategies for addressing racial inequities that persist within and beyond our public schools.

Award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates will headline the conference as its keynote speaker. Coates will be reading from his forthcoming book and first novel The Water Dancer slated for release at the end of September. In addition to the reading and a Q&A with the audience, Coates will be joined on stage for an in-conversation with Dr. Adriane D. Lentz-Smith, Associate Professor in the Department of History at Duke University, about race in America. Color of Education 2019 will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Raleigh Convention Center. Each ticket purchase will include a free copy of Coates' first novel The Water Dancer.

The full schedule and session details will be released in late summer, 2019. Full-day attendees will have the opportunity to deeply engage and network with others from across the state who are involved and interested in racial equity in education and beyond. Attendance at the full-day summit will count towards continuing education units (CEUs) for North Carolina teachers.
