This talk attempts to connect the dots in our studies of Asian America—from early 19th century immigration, the exclusion laws, the World War II era, post-1965 immigration, and the neoliberalism of recent decades. Asians have been coming to the Americas because western imperialists have been going to Asia. Asians have been moved by war, but overall, we’ve been moved by modern capitalist imperialism as laborers, entrepreneurs, refugees, students, and expatriates. This talk is a synthesis that offers a framework for understanding liberalism as the operative ideology of capitalist imperialism in order to parse as well as to to connect the distinct histories, conditions, and groups of Asian Americans in the United States. The topic links my book project with Asian American Studies and will show, I hope, the relevance of my work to Asian Americanists. My main field is US & the World/US Empire.
